Community, Family, and Friends of Returning and Incoming Quantum Leap Classroom Students,
Welcome to another school year! This semester, the students of the Quantum Leap Classroom of Mount Anthony Union High School will be selecting various topics within their content area that have particular interest to them. The majority of their work will focus on the production of a comprehensive Final Project - developing a presentation for the Quantum Leap Exhibit Room.
Working toward this goal will require students to participate in many hands-on activities and they will be utilizing a variety of media. For this 2007 Fall Exhibit, we will focus on researching and writing in the following themes:
Block I
Quantum Leap Science – Plants and Insects
(intra-classroom project) - Semester I class
Block II
Ancient Civilizations and World Cultures
The Study of Culture Through Cuisine
(inter-classroom project) - Semester I and II year long class
Block IV
Climatology and World Cultures
(intra-classroom project) - Semester I class
We will be inviting guest speakers to lecture, visit, encourage, and advise the World Cultures and Quantum Leap Science students over the course of this semester. They will have the opportunity of attending various field trips, including one to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Bronx Zoo, and the New York Botanical Garden. Students will also be given the opportunity to improve their organizational and writing skills by undergoing an extensive editing process and working one-on-one with individual staff members. It is with the use of these techniques that the students will receive the supports needed to produce work of exceptional quality… and that is our goal.
Primary goals include:
- Encouraging an appreciation of learning and a sense of accomplishment through student engagement
- Developing academic skills, which enable the student to take charge of his or her own learning
- Developing respect for oneself and others and enhancing communication skills
- Providing opportunities in a mentoring environment
- Exploring potential and building self-confidence through positive direction
Secondary goals include:
- Developing ideas into a focused concept and preliminary plan of action
- Increasing problem solving, exploration, and critical thinking skills
- Assessing current situations and developing goals
- Reviewing personal skills to identify strengths and gaps in knowledge
I truly look forward to working with these returning and incoming students of the Quantum Leap Classroom. It is my intention to make this 2007 Fall Exhibit an unforgettable experience for each and every one of them… and give them something to build upon in the future. Please set the date of January 11th at 7 PM aside for our next Program Exhibit. Student attendance is required, as their preparation, performance, and participation in this event will serve as their final exam. Admission is free of charge and open to the public.

WHAT DO STUDENTS DO IN THE QUANTUM LEAP CLASSROOM?
The students of the Quantum Leap Classroom will be involved in an integrated, and culturally stimulating, learning experience and given the opportunity to improve their organizational, researching, and writing skills by working on individual and group projects. They will focus great effort on producing work that is of exceptional quality to be included in the end of the semester exhibit, which will be on display for public scrutiny and/or publication. They will be very, very busy and they will be active and dynamically involved. They will receive continuous support and all assignments will be personalized to better meet the interests, requirements, credit needs, and educational levels of each individual student. There will be an emphasis on building an appreciation of learning for the sciences, arts, culture, and humanities.
WHO IS TYPICALLY RECOMMENDED FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE QUANTUM LEAP CLASSROOM?
The students of the Quantum Leap Classroom are hand selected by Mount Anthony Union High School Principal, Sue Maguire. They are students who exhibit great potential, yet, for one reason or another, have been currently identified as “at risk.” Key identifying factors for incoming freshman include loss of class credit at the Middle School level, while key identifying behaviors for those already in the high school environment include loss of high school credit due to disengagement, lack of motivation or effort, and/or a pattern of absences, tardies, or cuts. The classroom provides contacts and structural supports for re-engagement, while focusing strongly on academics through the development of personal choice. Spaces are limited to class size.
IS THE QUANTUM LEAP CLASSROOM A SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAM?
No. The Quantum Leap Classroom is not a special education program, however we do strive to accommodate individual needs as much as possible. At times, these may be greater than we are capable of servicing and, therefore, alternative arrangements or placements may need to be made. The Quantum Leap Classroom is a Bennington College Program based at Mount Anthony Union High School. The focus is on engaging and/or re-engaging high school students in academics. The level of standards is extremely high, as evidenced by student investment. MAY I SEE THE QUANTUM LEAP CLASSROOM?
Of course! We welcome outside visitors, family members, and professionals. Student visitors (peers), however, are not permitted during class hours as we have found that they are a distraction. Don’t be shy! If you are a parent or guardian of a stuent, we want to keep in contact with you and involve you (as much as you are willing) in your son or daughter’s education. (For security purposes, all visitors are required to obtain a visitor's pass from the main office of Mount Anthony Union High School on the day of the visit.)

- Mrs. Crosier is the creator and director of the Quantum Leap Classroom Exhibit, which is hosted by Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, Vermont. The Quantum Leap Classroom works in conjunction with, and hosts students of, the Mount Anthony Alternative Education Program and the Bridges Program. Each of these programs focuses on providing both transitional and academic support through interest-based learning experiences.
